Counsellor/Community Worker

Salary: $14.00 hourly / 30 hours per week

Abrigo Centre is a multi-service, charitable organization that focuses on building community capacity in west Toronto by helping individuals and families achieve their full potential. We are a United Way Anchor Agency with an exceptional reputation for serving the diverse needs of Toronto’s Portuguese-speaking communities. We are currently seeking 1 (one) Counsellor/Community Worker under the Canada Summer Jobs initiative) to support the objectives of our Violence Against Women (VAW) counselling services and our Community Development and Integration (CDI) program.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assess client service needs and provide information and referrals.
• As a member of the VAW team, provide information and support services to women affected by domestic abuse, including interpretation and escorting to essential services.
• Provide short-term case management and supportive counselling to individuals and families requiring access to essential services such as housing, income maintenance and disability benefits, as a member of the CDI team.
• Provide administrative support to programs, including reception duties.
• Liaise with government, community groups, educational institutions and volunteers.
• Maintain and complete necessary paperwork, including case notes.
• Participate in team meetings, agency outreach activities and other projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Must have ability to communicate in both English and Portuguese for this position.
• Flexible, team player and self motivated.
• Ability to handle a multiplicity of tasks and responsibilities.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to problematic family dynamics, including woman abuse and child abuse is an asset.
• Post-secondary degree with related counseling experience is an asset.

To be eligible for a position that is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, you will need to be between 15-30 years of age. You also need to have been registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and have the intentions of returning to school on a full time basis in September. You will also need to be a Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee and be legally entitled to work.
