    COVID-19 Impacts Service Delivery

The Abrigo Centre has adjusted its service delivery to provide phone, email and online support. Please note that if you need assistance from our agency please call us at 416-534-3434 during normal business hours.

All front line staff, starting Wednesday, March 18, will work from home and going forward all regularly scheduled client appointments will occur over the phone. Providing outstanding service will remain a priority as we continue through this transition. Staff will be equipped to work remotely and we fully expect the needs of our clients will be met and special attention made to ensure our most vulnerable clients receive the care they require.

All Abrigo group activities have been temporarily suspended as well. The health, safety and well-being of all Abrigo Centre clients, volunteers and staff members is paramount.

Abrigo will continue to monitor this situation closely and will provide appropriate updates as required. We appreciate your understanding at this time. Working together we can continue to serve our clients and ensure the health of all involved.

Agency moving to delivery of services by phone

With the health and safety of our clients, staff, students
and volunteers in mind, the Abrigo Centre is responding to the increasing
public health risk due to COVID-19 by taking steps to minimize the threat of
community transmission. As such, Abrigo is moving to a modified level of
service delivery. Beginning today, Abrigo counsellors will start a process to
eliminate in-person client meetings and move to phone based interactions only
    for an indefinite period.

Abrigo’s Open Intake program, typically running weekdays
from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., will only operate by phone. Clients can now call
at any time during normal business hours to schedule a phone meeting with a

Clients taking part in Abrigo’s Income Tax clinic are now
being contacted by phone to reschedule their appointment at a later date.
Abrigo programs such as our Women’s Group, Art Therapy class, Seniors group,
Success by Six or Fathers’ programs are now suspended until further notice.
Abrigo’s PAR program is continuing but its status is under review as we consult
with the appropriate government ministry and our peer service providers.

Abrigo will review these new protocols regularly and examine
how best to provide our services based on the rapidly changing environment.

Abrigo staff members reporting to work will be asked to
follow social distance guidelines. Staff have been instructed not to attend any
training, conferences, workshops or external meetings. Employees are also
advised to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada at this time. Those
who have or will travel outside of Canada will be asked to observe a 14 day
    self-isolation period upon their return.

Our agency appreciates your support and patience as we
navigate through this unprecedented time. Please stay safe, vigilant and

New screening measures implemented to fight COVID-19

The health and safety of Abrigo clients, staff, volunteers and student placement workers is of the utmost importance to us. As such Abrigo has proactively instituted a new passive screening process to potentially identify and help stop the spread of COVID-19 or the coronavirus.

Screening of all clients will begin on Monday, March 16. A simple series of three questions will help identify possible COVID-19 patients.

We encourage any client who is feeling ill or has a cough, cold, fever, trouble breathing, aches and pains or diarrhea to stay home and contact their family physician, local Public Health unit or Telehealth Ontario.

If you are in one of Abrigo parenting groups, the PAR group, or Women's group for example and you are not feeling well, please call to let us know of your absence and stay home.

Stay healthy by washing your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, avoid others who are ill, cough or sneeze into your sleeve or "elbow pocket", clean and disinfect hard surfaces and devices regularly, and practice social distancing by not attending large events. For more information please visit the Toronto Public Health website. https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/health-wellness-care/diseases-medications-vaccines/coronavirus/

Please stay healthy everyone, thank you for your assistance.

  • Abrigo Seniors Program is temporarily suspended

    12 March 2020 / Uncategorized / 0 Comment

Status update to be provided on April 1With the rapid growth of COVID-19 or the coronavirus, the Abrigo Centre has decided to temporarily suspend the Life and Hope seniors group until at least April 1, 2020. On April 1 a decision will be made whether to continue with the suspension or establish a new start date. This program normally occurs Tuesday through Thursday on Abrigo's second floor.

The health and wellbeing of our clients, staff and volunteers is of the utmost concern for our agency. Although the dynamic seniors program plays an important part in the lives of many clients, protecting their safety and that of our staff members, students and volunteers is a priority.

In addition to the suspension of the seniors program, Abrigo has also postponed an Information Night and Reception for the adult children of our senior clients scheduled for Thursday, March 26. Held annually, the evening is an opportunity for the adult children to experience the Abrigo Centre, many for the first time, and learn more about the organization and how it impacts their parents. This event will be rescheduled for a later date.

As COVID-19 evolves it may impact other Abrigo programs and services. Watch here for more information as it becomes available.

New Kitchenware Needed to Replace Aging Items

It’s been said that food brings people together. A simple meal can turn strangers into friends or cement a relationship.

For members of Abrigo’s Groupo Vida e Esperança or Life and Hope seniors group, the opportunity to have lunch together each day is an important part of building a positive peer environment and removing people from social isolation.

After more than nine years of continued growth – the Life and Hope group started with five volunteers and now totals more than 240 members – our seniors need new kitchenware to prepare and serve clients their daily meals.

The odd assortment of old, worn and previously donated pots, pans, dishes and trays our volunteers use to make and serve those meals are showing their age and declining rapidly so today we have an urgent need for new kitchenware.

Please demonstrate your support for our clients and volunteers by helping Abrigo raise $2,000 to purchase new pots, pans and serving dishes for our second floor kitchen.

Together, with the support of others in the community, your gift of $20, $40 or any amount will go a long way to help us reach this goal.

  • Royal St. George's College Students Make Annual Visit to Abrigo

Day of Service assists clients in the Life and Hope group

Giving back to the community is an important aspect of being a student at Royal St. George's College. During their third annual day of service visit to Abrigo eight young men shoveled, cleaned and generally tidied up Abrigo while also learning a bit about our history and the work we do to support women facing domestic abuse and the 6,500 clients we see annually.

The boys also shared a meal with the seniors in attendance then shared stories about their cultural background and grandparents.

It proved to be both very productive and a lot of fun along the way. Thank you to all the young men of RSGC for spending the day with us. Hopefully we'll see you next year.
