Low Scores and a High Level of Fundraising Rule the Day

Lusogolf Fundraising Incorporation hosted its twentieth annual fundraising golf tournament in support of a number of educational initiatives and the Abrigo Centre, on Saturday, May 27 at the beautiful Caledon Country Club.

Lusogolf was established to raise funds and encourage Portuguese-speaking Canadian children to pursue post-secondary education. In 2016, this tournament netted $37,000 and from those proceeds, $4,500 was donated to the Abrigo Centre.

As usual, there was a full field of eager golfers ready to tackle a wet but challenging course. The warm, cloudy day and soft greens provided perfect conditions for low scores.

As usual, the local business community stepped up and provided a number of corporate sponsorships including LiUNA Local 183, Local 506, North American General Contractor Ltd., Manulife and Lancaster Homes.

The event finished up with a fabulous dinner and a number of golfers went home with some fantastic prizes.

Abrigo thanks Lusogolf Chair Enir Bassani, Joe Silva and the other members of the Lusogolf Committee for their generous support.

Musician Nuno Cristo performs at Abrigo's annual Mother's Day celebration

The Abrigo Centre was proud to have guest musician and singer Nuno Cristo perform for a full house of seniors at our annual Mother's Day celebration. The colourful event featured wonderful food, music and dancing but around the festivities, Mr. Cristo performed an hour long set of classic Portuguese folk music much to the delight of his audience. His energetic music brought many onto the dance floor and Abrigo clients were singing along to a number of the songs in unison with Mr. Cristo.

Mr. Cristo performed at Abrigo's Imagine the Possibilities Gala in March and we were delighted that he donated his time and talents to entertain our clients and give back to the community.

An 8 member team from Sun Life volunteer their time to assist Abrigo seniors

On Tuesday, May 9 the Abrigo Centre had the privilege to host an eight member team of volunteers from Sun Life who spent the morning volunteering their time to assist Abrigo's Life and Hope Educational and Recreational program for seniors.

Their visit was part of the United Way Toronto York Region's Day of Caring - an annual event that sees corporate teams of donors to the United Way connect with the agencies and the people they support.

Abrigo was participating in this important initiative for the first time as were many of the volunteers from Sun Life. The experience proved to be extremely rewarding for Abrigo and our clients. Not only did we receive help with food preparations, gardening on our rooftop patio and assistance with painting a new mural, our clients got the experience of connecting one-to-one with a community member who is engaged and willing to give back.

During this short period of time not only were new friendships made, the Sun Life volunteers got a better understanding of the important work Abrigo does in the community and the impact it has on the people we serve.

Our sincere thanks to the entire Sun Life volunteer team for spending a few hours of their valuable time with us!
